What is your vision of life in the future?

Tell students that they will read fiction and
nonfiction selections about advancements in
science and life in the future. Point out that
this unit includes an excerpt from a science
fiction novel, poetry, an interview, and a
science and a social studies article. Students
will practice reading strategies, such as taking
notes, analyzing text structure, and making
generalizations.

Ask the following questions to stimulate discussion:
• What do you think schooling will be like in
the future? How do you think students will
learn their subjects?
• How will we communicate with each other?
What is already happening in communication
that will help answer this question?
• How will forms of entertainment be different?

You will read about a group of friends
who travel to the year 2095 and about
scientists who are unlocking the secrets
of DNA. As you read, you will practice
the literary and academic language you
need to use in school.
